The Arete Scholarship Program
The most articulated value in Greek culture is areté. Translated as "virtue," the word actually means something closer to "being the best you can be," or "reaching your highest human potential". Areté was a significant part of the education of ancient Greeks: the training of the boy to manhood. This training in areté included: physical training, mental training, which included oratory, rhetoric, and basic sciences, and spiritual training, which included music and what is called virtue. By the fourth and fifth centuries BC, areté as applied to men had developed to include quieter virtues, such as justice and self-restraint.
The Delta Chi Fraternity at Indiana University embraces these ideals for its members and we financially support an incoming freshman for each fall semester who holds these same ideals. Every fall semester we offer a one time $500 scholarship to an incoming male student that best exemplifies these ideals. You do not have to join Delta Chi to qualify. You must have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. Those that meet the GPA requirement will then be considered equal. You will be judged in the following areas.
We will be looking for an individual who has shown extensive community service and/or, strong leadership and/or outstanding athletic or performing arts (music, dance, theater, etc.) accomplishments. Financial need is not considered for this scholarship.
